Research cluster puts Covid issues in the spotlight

As the true scale and severity of the Covid-19 pandemic became apparent, scholars at Lingnan University moved quickly to set up a wide-ranging series of research projects.
They could see the importance of studying the outbreak’s likely longer-term impact on different sectors of society and gaining a better understanding of what all the disruptions to normal life would mean.
In particular, they knew it was a golden opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research, looking not just at the direct effects of the disease and how it was handled, but also at the challenges faced by families, schoolchildren, university students, and those now out of work.
From early on, a few things were clear. A stalling economy would have a major effect on many people’s livelihoods. And, however long they lasted, measures such as the switch to online schooling and stringent social distancing requirements were going to be detrimental to overall physical and mental well-being of the local community.
These stood out as key areas for investigation and, for Lingnan, ultimately formed the basis of a distinct research cluster focused on Covid-19 and its consequences.
Added relevance came from the fact that many of approved projects could also be tied directly to one or more of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, which set out a clear framework for global development and humanitarian priorities in the 21st century.
Extensive and essential, the SDGs include headline objectives such as no poverty, good health and well-being, and quality education for all. But they also outline necessary targets for everything from decent work and economic growth to reduced inequalities, climate action, sustainable cities and communities and, as number 17, partnerships for the goals.
Already a leader in quality liberal arts education, Lingnan University has made a firm commitment to advancing these principles in the years ahead.
That can be seen in curriculum developments and new course choices; in academic exchanges and special activities arranged to promote knowledge transfer; in social engagement schemes designed to assist the less advantaged; in entrepreneurship initiatives to support start-ups; and in the university’s approach to corporate governance and administration.
But as much as anywhere, it can be found in the type of research projects being proposed by different departments. After winning funding from Lingnan or other sources, many of these go on to influence thinking, inspire productive debate, and achieve deserved recognition in international academic circles once the findings are published.
Among the best examples are a number of projects under the Covid-19 cluster, which serve to illustrate how the pandemic has hit diverse facets of life in Hong Kong and what kind of remedial or corrective action can be recommended over the longer term.
Each is being funded by the Lingnan Research Committee, which these days pays particular attention to real-world significance and SDG links in its assessments, as well as the potential for developing partnerships with other institutions.
For instance, one current study is looking at the well-being and health literacy of school principals, management teams and teachers during the ongoing pandemic.
Led by Prof Padmore Adusei Amoah of the School of Graduate Studies, the work is zeroing in on an issue which tends to be overlooked: the increased burden shouldered by those who have had to organise online classes and deal with all the extra complications that inevitably resulted.
So far, much of the public discourse has been about the impact of the changes on school children, their parents, and the merits or otherwise of learning online. But clearly, the viewpoint of teachers and principals – and the difficulties they encounter - require similar consideration, especially if some authorities now see more blended or hybrid learning as the way forward for youngsters in every age group.
Another research project, jointly run by Prof Maggie Ka Wai Lau of the School of Graduate Studies and Prof Stefan Kuehner of the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, involved an international survey of children’s well-being during Covid-19.
Significantly, it found that children in Hong Kong had a low ranking overall and expressed most dissatisfaction about “time use” and “being listened to by adults”. Obviously, there are key lessons to learn here for anyone concerned about the well-being of young people and how they can be helped to regain the sense of stability and participation that allows them to thrive.
Taking a different tack, Prof Gizem Arat of the Department of Sociology and Social Policy has been exploring the possible factors for the prevention of Covid-19 cases among underprivileged ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. And, in the Department of Management, a study of the pandemic’s impact on doctors and nurses was overseen by Prof Nan Wang and Prof Nancy Yifeng Chen.
No doubt, many new research angles will emerge as Hong Kong follows its own path to combating the coronavirus, relaxing restrictions, and fully reclaiming its place as a hub for trade, finance and travel.
For Lingnan’s scholars, the goal is to play a full part in the process of studying what could or should have been done and highlighting areas where faster action and better answers are needed.
