Rethinking Institutional Priorities for Emerging Opportunities and Sustainable Impact

Due to recent changes in international travel across the Greater China area, many of our international partners have reached out to us to request the postponement of the conference. Considering this and to facilitate more academics to join the conference, we will be postponing the conference and the date will be announced in the next few weeks.
Participants who have registered and have been accepted to the conference will receive notice about the next steps. The new date for the conference will be announced in the first week of January 2023. Hope to see you in the Spring of 2023.

Background
Higher education institutions are striving to create a positive impact and serve the needs of the community. The conference aims to bring various stakeholders from academic institutions to discuss, rethink and prioritize institutional goals and strategize for a world filled with volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The students entering the workforce and who will be in major leadership positions in the second half of the 21st century require more exposure to problem-solving prowess acquired through interacting with real-world wicked problems.
The world economic forum in 2020 stated, “Critical thinking and problem-solving top the list of skills that employers believe will grow in prominence in the next five years. These have been consistent since the first report in 2016.”. So as education institutions how we train should align with these competencies of the future.
The interdisciplinary conference seeks to bring faculty from various fields to share ideas, experiences, and action plans for tackling Global Grand Challenges (GGCs). To share how this can be done through high-quality community-facing learning opportunities for our students to address the needs of neglected populations and strive towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will also explore how nurturing student leadership and entrepreneurship through inclusive business models can potentially lead to higher employability as students are nudged to cultivate their entrepreneurial spirit through solving particular GGC.
The conference will provide the perfect platform for participating members of Alliance of Asian Liberal Arts Universities (AALAU), Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA), and other partner institutions to build coalitions for future teaching and collaboration opportunities in Humanitarian Technology, Holistic development among students for career readiness, Inclusive Business, and addressing GGCs and SDGs through High Impact Practices. The goal of the conference is to jointly construct a common road map, built around the collective strength of AALAU, GLAA, and other partners to make measurable contributions to selected SDGs and GGCs in the next 5 years.
This conference will bring together about 40 AALAU, GLAA, and other partner institutions to Hong Kong to develop a long-term project partnership for contributing to SDGs through global Service-Learning programmes.
Objectives
- To deliberate institutional priorities and strategies for creating sustainable impact
- To establish frameworks for Liberal Arts Institutions to build partnerships with public and private sectors
- To explore Leadership and Employability in the 21st Century through collaborative learning design
- To develop ways to track impact in local and international collaborative endeavours.
Scope of Discussion
1. Discussion on Institutional priorities and strategies for Impact.
What is the role of universities in community development? How can we mobilize resources to achieve climate and social justice?
2. Establishing entrepreneurship education frameworks for Liberal arts institutions.
How to build interdisciplinary partnerships? What do partnerships with the private sector, government, and non-government organisations look like? How can we create learning programmes for students through these partnerships?
3. Leadership and Employability in the 21st century.
How can we connect community learning and research opportunities? what are the steps we should take to share flagship global Service-Learning and knowledge-exchange projects?
4. Tracking Impact and practical considerations.
How can we create a method to track the impact which our partnerships have in the community? How do we make them accessible to everyone to improve knowledge exchange?
